She then begins to hear noises coming from the attic at night, which coincides with the flickering of the gas lights.Īs lighting a gas lamp can interrupt the flow of gas to other already-lit lamps, the implication is that someone is lighting one in the attic, causing the others to dim. Manningham blames his wife, Bella, for a series of missing belongings, though she has no memory of having done anything with them. In December 1938, London’s Richmond Theatre premiered Patrick Hamilton’s latest play: Gas Light, a psychological thriller set in the 1880s. Its oft-overlooked origin story features appearances by Vincent Price, Ingrid Bergman, and-most importantly-some actual gas lights. To gaslight a person is to psychologically manipulate them into distrusting their own memories or even their entire sense of reality. While the term gaslighting gets bandied about with casual inaccuracy these days, its definition is a little more complicated than simply lying to someone. ![]()

He thought it would be beneficial to distinguish analytically two aspects of place identity, namely, place identity of a place and people’s place identity. Another dominant explanation of place identity can be found in most of Paasi’s articles ( Paasi, 1986, 1991, 2002c, 2003, 2009a, b). Proshansky’s view on place identity has been widely referred to. As broadly acknowledged, place identity was initially introduced by Proshansky (1978), who defined place identity as “those dimensions of self that define the individual’s personal identity in relation to the physical environment by means of a complex pattern of conscious and unconscious ideas, feelings, values, goals, preferences, skills, and behavioral tendencies relevant to a specific environment” ( Proshansky, 1978, p. The social constructivist theory of place identity sheds light on individuals’ subjective perceptions of geographical space, providing valuable insights for studies of various disciplines, such as geography, sociology, psychology, environmental sciences and ecology, public administration, spatial planning, and so on ( Haartsen et al., 2000). Place identity is a versatile concept upon which many psychological theories of human–environment relations are built ( Zimmerbauer et al., 2012 Gieseking et al., 2014). Finally, this paper summarizes the meanings of place identity in four dimensions and in turn offers some suggestions for further research directions. To supplement the scientometric analysis, a deep survey on measuring methods and roles of place identity in the contents of academic articles was done to trace knowledge connections between different empirical understandings of place identity. These meanings are intertwined in shaping the knowledge base of thematic concentrations. Versatile meanings of place identity are witnessed in different clusters and articles of a cluster. ![]() A network of co-cited references identified seven dominant research clusters, of which the research on the influence of place identity on social actors’ attitudes and behaviors is most prominent and the research on the effects of physical environment change on place identity captures the latest emerging area. Studies in this field experienced an active exploration in plural disciplines after 2000, and the hot area gradually concentrated on the discipline of humanities and social sciences after 2010 and shifted toward place marketing until now. The scientometric review reveals the extensive applications of place identity in various topics. ![]() The data set input into CiteSpace consists of 1,011 bibliographic records retrieved from the core database of Web of Science with a title search of the articles published between 1985 and July 2019. In order to synthesize the extensively studied place identities and their meanings, this paper reviews how researchers have conceived and deconstructed place identity. ![]() ![]() ![]() She noted, though, that roughly 46% of Angel City fans are “straight white dudes hanging out with their bros.” She noted community is key, and that fostering a sense of engagement and safety at the team’s home venue, BMO stadium (formerly Banc of California Stadium), is one reason fans keep coming back.Īdding free metro rides to BMO stadium and private rooms for nursing fans to breastfeed or fans on the spectrum to avoid sensory overload, were just some of the ways ACFC tried to include its community in the concept of its stadium, Fleischauer said. You’ll be doing a lot of that work yourself to start, but it’s immensely satisfying to watch your base grow – both technologically and visually – as you recruit more followers. Converting folk you find out in the field lets you put them to work gathering resources like wood and stone, worshiping your visage to generate a resource called devotion, or cleaning up the poop they’ll generously litter the edges of your camp with. The action sections may be how you move the relatively simple plot along, but the base building is where all of the real mechanical progression lies. ![]() Field of Screamsĭespite the horrible appearance of Cult of the Lamb’s largest enemies, many of them will delightfully turn into adorable friends your size upon defeat – friends who can then be recruited to your cult back home. But if you have even a passing familiarity with roguelike action games, you’ll probably want to notch the difficulty up to Hard from the start – I rarely had to do much more than spam the attack button to beat each boss on my first try, which doesn’t really give their clever designs the spotlight they deserve. These fights can be creative both in the visual design of the horrific eldritch monstrosities you face and the almost bullet hell-like attacks they throw at you. Of course, stumbling upon a powerful card like that could also trivialize the boss encounters on the default difficulty. It’s a bit of a shame that a majority of them are simply stat upgrades like a 20% increase to weapon damage, meaning they never did much to shake up my actual playstyle on a given run, but getting lucky by finding a rare tarot card to fully double the attack speed of my axe was still a lot of fun when it happened. These power-ups give you boons that can range from extra health to adding a projectile to your melee attack to making enemies drop fish when killed. With runs being so short, that means you frequently won’t even get a chance to find a workable replacement before the end, and having a go at a boss hamstrung by a poor roll at the very start definitely wore on my patience more than once.īut while you don’t get enough opportunities to choose your attacks, you are given plenty of chances to influence your kit mid-run through tarot cards. Similarly, some curses can be satisfying AoE blasts while others drop a pile of ineffective goo. While the default sword and harder-hitting axe are reliably great, the frustratingly slow hammer and the gloves (which deal most of their damage only on the final hit of their attack combo) are ill-suited against Cult of the Lamb’s fairly mobile enemies. The one major drawback is that you are given a random weapon and curse at the start of each crusade, but unfortunately you have no control over which ones you’ll see and the possibilities are far from equal. The different types of weapons, curses, and tarot card-based buffs you can find along the way can also help shake up each new outing as you work your way toward the end of the campaign. The dodge in particular is delightfully snappy, giving you a responsive way to evade the well-telegraphed attacks of enemies as you cut through rooms full of cultists and monsters alike. It’s not overly complex, with little more than a single attack button, a special “curse” power, and a dodge-roll at your disposal, but each of those elements are honed to an effective edge. That’s not to say the combat isn’t fun in its own right, though. ![]() That’s good company to be in regardless, and I enjoyed that my decisions out on the hunt were often influenced by the needs of my cultists diligently working back home rather than it always being the other way around. It’s safe to say that for all the DNA Cult of the Lamb shares with a game like Dead Cells, it’s just as closely related to a management game like Oxygen Not Included. Those short outings aren’t necessarily a bad thing, but they did mean I spent most of the 13 hours it took me to reach the credits building out my base and completing little quests for NPCs rather than swinging a weapon. You even pick between one of four disconnected areas to fight through at the start of every run, with a boss waiting to be beaten at the end of each one in order to complete the story, which means Cult of the Lamb lacks that familiar roguelike tension of seeing how deep into the gauntlet you can manage to make it every time. Each crusade is randomized and repeatable in the same way, but they are also far shorter – most take around just 10 minutes total. While Cult of the Lamb is a roguelite dungeon crawler that randomizes level layouts and the items you come across each run as you become progressively more powerful between them, comparing it directly to similar games like Hades or Rogue Legacy would be a bit misleading. ![]() ![]() The summer edition of the EACC will take place online this year from 28 June to 4 July across four markets in China, Korea.
